Through the course students will gain: 1) An understanding of concepts in urban design and an appreciation for the 'meaning' of spaces. 2) Knowledge of the history of architectural responses to the needs of cities. 3) An appreciation for how the construction of a community contributes to its identity.

This course is designed to provide students with a general overview of the ideas and events that have shaped contemporary cities. We will examine the complex relationships between human societies?culture, politics, and economics and the shape of urban settlements. It will include an introduction to major concepts, tools, and methods in urban design practice. Throughout the course, students will apply these to the analysis and understanding of urban settings and the dynamics of urban transformation.
